Sherbet powder
As early as 1900, simple well water could be flavoured and made to sparkle with homemade sherbet powder and icing sugar. Alternatively, the addition of fruit juices or fruit vinegar added variety to this refreshing drink. The sherbet powder consists of baking soda, cream of tartar and icing sugar and should be consumed directly after adding it to a glass of water.
Method:
- Weigh out 40 grams of baking soda powder and 30 grams of tartaric acid for the sherbet and pour into two labelled, separate glasses.
- For a glass of sherbet, mix 1/2 teaspoon of icing sugar with a small pinch of tartaric acid and a small pinch of bicarbonate of soda powder in a cup.
- Add the finished sherbet powder to the prepared glass of water, stir and enjoy straight away.
Tip: If you want to make the sherbet a little more varied, you can also add 1 teaspoon of fruit juice, fruit syrup or fruit vinegar before stirring in the sherbet powder.
