Oatmeal macaroons with peanut butter

This recipe comes from the recipe booklet "Amerika helps us cook. Recipes with US food for the German housewife". The small booklet was intended to help housewives in post-war Germany to make proper use of the contents of the CARE parcels arriving from the USA. The first CARE packages arrived in Bremerhaven on 15 July 1946. They were initially ten-in-one rations from US army stocks, originally intended to feed 10 soldiers. An average parcel contained 40 thousand calories. The packets contained milk, dried meat, oatmeal, sugar, fruit and peanut butter, for example. The oatmeal macaroons are real energy suppliers that taste good and can be stored for a long time.

Method:

  1. Mix the peanut butter at room temperature with the milk and sugar.
  2. Add the sifted flour mixed with baking powder.
  3. Finally, knead in the rolled oats to form a firm but still smooth dough.
4 Shape into walnut-sized balls and press flat.
  4. Bake in an oven preheated to 180-200 °C on the middle shelf for about 20 minutes until golden brown.

Tip: If the dough seems too dry and firm, simply add a little more milk.
